Tradestaff Global is seeking expressions of interest from qualified and experienced Structural Steel Welders to join a major new-build commercial construction project at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.
Deployment is scheduled for Sept/Oct 2025.
 
About the Role:
You'll be assembling and welding large steel framing as part of a dynamic construction team. Previous hands-on experience erecting large steel structures is essential. In the spirit of teamwork, you'll also be expected to support other trades and assist with general labouring when needed.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:
  • Vaccinations: You need to be happy to have Flu, Tdap & MMR Vaccines.
  • Qualifications: Trade-qualified structural steel welder holding a current 9606 ticket. If expired, we may assist with re-certification. Please clearly state the status of your 9606 ticket in your application.
  • Experience: Strong background in large structural steel erection is a must.
  • Documentation: Proof of qualifications (current or expired) will be required at interview.
  • Resume: A detailed, up-to-date CV outlining your skills, experience, and project history.
  • Tech Skills: Comfortable working with detailed paperwork and computer systems.
  • Patience: The application and mobilisation process is thorough and can take several months to complete.

Please note:
This is a physically demanding role requiring excellent fitness. Long hours, extreme weather, and fast-paced work are all part of daily life on the Ice.

This is challenging work in one of the most remote locations on Earth — but for the right person, it’s an unforgettable opportunity to experience Antarctica while being well-rewarded for your efforts.

Expected Hours:
  • 54 hours per week, working 6 days out of 7
  • Hours remain consistent, even if weather impacts operations
  Approximate Dates:
  • Deployment in Sept / Oct 2025 for approximately 4 weeks
  • You will be away for the entire duration
  • Exact dates depend on medical clearances, notice periods, and flight availability
  Application Process:
Because of the nature of working in Antarctica, the onboarding process is extensive.
  • You will need to make yourself available for Phone & Video interviews.
  • Willingness to travel to Tauranga for medicals and dental exams (flights provided if needed)
  • Comprehensive medical and dental exams (costs covered by us) are required
  • Background and criminal record checks will be conducted
 
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Due to travel restrictions, ONLY New Zealand and US Citizens with New Zealand or US passports currently and permanently living and working in New Zealand can apply.
  • Clean criminal record
  • Full Class 1 Driver’s Licence
